Sir Albert Bore launches search for Social Business Angels

The launch of our initiative to set up a new investment angel group for social enterprises based in the Greater Birmingham area was a great success and we look forward now to building on that event and meeting more potential investors together with social enterprises keen to learn how to pitch to them in our forthcoming workshops.

Anthony Collins solicitors hosted the launch event on 20th May and over 40 people attended, keen to hear about the opportunities available.  Sir Albert Bore, Leader of Birmingham City Council emphasised the Council’s commitment to supporting the social enterprise sector as part of its Business Charter for Social Responsibility.  He mentioned the Digbeth Social Enterprise Quarter, which he launched in December 2013 and the council’s commissioning policy which he said had been completely redesigned with the help of the Birmingham and Solihull Social Economy Consortium (BSSEC) to place social value at its heart.  He also referred to Birmingham’s enterprising heritage, which in the 1800s and early 1900s saw some of its biggest employers committed to philanthropy and social reform, Cadburys perhaps being the most well-known, and he called for today’s social entrepreneurs to show the world that this spirit of ‘business-for-social-value’ still exists in the City.

Also speaking at the event were Wade Lyn, who until recently led the sub-group for social enterprise of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, Heidi Harris of Harris Accountancy CIC who talked about the new Social Investment Tax Relief and Karen Anderson of ClearlySo, who explained how business angels work and the potential impact of social business angels on the growth of the sector.  To round up the evening, a number of social enterprises got a chance to ‘pitch’ for investment.

Four workshops will be held in the coming months, which are free to attend if you are a social enterprise interested in learning how to pitch for investment or an individual or organisation interested in making a social investment.  Choose from one of the following dates: 4th June, 26th June, 16th July, 4th September.  For further information, or to book, call Marija on 0121 771 1411 or email
