Social Enterprise Start-Up

Birgit Kehrer came to iSE wishing to use her love of food to create social change. In partnership with Sifa Fireside – a Birmingham-based charity tackling homelessness and alcohol issues – we worked with Birgit to develop a business plan, marketing strategy and legal structure for a new food business.

In June 2010, social enterprise ChangeKitchen was born. Trainees at ChangeKitchen work alongside Birgit in paid employment placements, developing skills and confidence to provide a steppingstone into mainstream employment. Through its vibrant range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free catering, ChangeKitchen aims to celebrate the diversity of society, specialising in events that bring both traditionalists and fastidious foodies together, regardless of cultural background, dietary requirements or lifestyle choice.

ChangeKitchen has so far catered for numerous events throughout Birmingham including a yoga retreat and a 70th birthday party, and were recently selected to cater for 1,200 people at the world’s biggest social enterprise event, Social Enterprise Exchange.
